RICE
Rice is considered by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as one of the most important foods for human nutrition.
Rice plays a fundamental role not only in the fight against hunger, but also in generating employment and income for millions of people. The year of 2004, for example, was considered by the FAO as the International Year of Rice. It is the only cereal to receive such distinction. Currently, about 90% of the world's rice is produced and consumed in Asian countries.
Brazil also stands out for its important participation in supplying the product, both to the domestic and international markets. Although the origins of rice are not very precise, it is widely cultivated nowadays. Historians and scientists report that rice was already cultivated around 3,000 BC, originating in Southeast Asia.
